Return to Monkey Island Walkthrough: First Objectives and Hint Book
Start Part I by seeking expedition funding, checking LeChuck’s job offer and collecting the Hint Book. This opening walkthrough gets the in-game objective-based help working; it is not a complete mop, disguise or island-key solution.

Walkthrough steps
- Enter the SCUMM Bar after the opening scenes and speak to the pirate leaders at the far end about funding. Their refusal advances the early town sequence.
- Collect the trivia book if you want its optional questions, then examine the job opening at LeChuck’s ship. Learn the mop and disguise requirements before buying random items.
- Head to Low Street and visit the International House of Mojo. Talk with the Voodoo Lady to receive the Hint Book.
- Open the Hint Book from the inventory and choose the objective you are actually pursuing. Read one level of help before asking for the next.
- Visit the SCUMM Bar kitchen and discuss the cook’s mop. Examine the relevant object so the objective and its hints have the necessary context.
- Use Guybrush’s to-do list to choose the next thread. Return to the hint book after a new clue or obstacle rather than following a route for the wrong difficulty mode.
Version notes and help
A spoiler-light way to progress
Hints become more explicit as you request further help. Stop at the first clue that gives you an idea; asking all the way through can reveal the solution. The book follows current progress, so inspect the obstacle and exhaust its relevant conversation if the expected topic is absent.
Casual versus Hard
Both modes tell the story, but Hard adds puzzle dependencies. A checklist written for Hard can ask for actions absent in Casual. This guide focuses on the shared early objective setup and does not pretend that one fixed purchase list completes both modes.
Optional trivia is separate
Trivia cards are a side activity, not the main chain of requirements for making a mop or joining a ship. When stuck on the expedition, return to its to-do objective instead of treating every card as a progression item.

The Voodoo Lady gives it to Guybrush in the Mojo shop during early Part I.
Does opening the book immediately spoil the puzzle?
It offers increasingly explicit help. You can stop before asking for the direct solution.
