Myst Walkthrough: Marker Switches and the Mechanical Age Entrance
Begin by learning the island’s marker-switch and library-map system. The tower reveals the clock and gear clues for the Mechanical Age. This walkthrough covers Myst Island orientation and that Age’s entrance, not the later Ages or final choice.

Walkthrough steps
- Explore the island and read Atrus’s note to Catherine. Count eight marker switches in total, even though the clock-tower switch is not yet accessible.
- Turn on the reachable marker switches. In the forechamber by the dock, open the imager controls and enter 8 to view Atrus’s message.
- Visit the library. Place the loose red and blue pages into their matching books and listen to their occupants. Examine the unburned journal books for diagrams and clues.
- On the library map, hold the rotating tower control. Align it with a marked location until the line turns red.
- Use the bookshelf painting to open the tower passage. Ride the lift and record the clue for the location you selected; the other painting opens the outside exit.
- For the large gears, note the clock time 2:40 and the three-number gear setting 2, 2, 1 from the tower clues.
- Set the clock to 2:40 using its two adjustment wheels and press the button. Cross the newly available bridge, raise its marker switch and enter the clock mechanism.
- Set the mechanism to 2, 2, 1. Holding a control can continue moving the middle gear. Once the large gears open, go there to find the Mechanical linking book.
Version notes and help
Do not skip the map clues
Marker switches populate the map. Rotating the tower alone does not solve each landmark: use the secret passage and look behind the lift to record the actual clue. Keep one note per landmark to avoid applying a spaceship clue to the clock.
Original versus remake
This page targets the original fixed-view puzzle layout. Later remakes and randomization settings may alter clues or presentation. If your game offers randomized puzzles, use the numbers displayed inside your own tower rather than forcing the reference values.
Spoiler boundary
The Mechanical Age contains its own fortress, rotation and return-book puzzles. This guide ends at its entrance and does not tell you which final book to trust.
Common questions
Why do I count only seven reachable switches?
The eighth is at the clock tower and becomes reachable after solving the bridge setup.
Does this finish Myst?
No. It explains the starting island system and the entrance to the Mechanical Age only.
