King’s Quest VI Walkthrough: Get the Magic Map
To leave the starting island, recover Alexander’s ring, learn about the magic map from the ferryman, then trade the ring at the pawn shop. This opening walkthrough avoids the sea trap and explains the map’s first use.

Walkthrough steps
- On the starting beach, take the shining royal ring. Move the plank, open the revealed box and collect the coin.
- Go to the castle entrance, speak with the guards and show the ring when Alexander needs to establish his identity. Finish the audience before exploring town.
- Visit the bookshop. Ask the owner about the island and the ferryman, and collect the free dull book from the table.
- At the docks, do not follow the swimmer into the sea. Knock on the ferry door and discuss the islands and the magical map with the ferryman.
- Return to the pawn shop and ask specifically about the map. Offer the royal ring in exchange, rather than spending the coin on an unrelated item.
- Return to an island beach and use the map from inventory. Choose an available destination to begin the next puzzle chain.
- Make a separate save after getting the map, keeping an earlier save before important trades. The ring can be recovered later through another exchange, so note where it was left.
Version notes and help
Why the shopkeeper will not discuss the map
The relevant conversation is unlocked by learning about it from the ferryman. Merely visiting the pawn shop first is not enough. Revisit the ferry and finish the topic before trying the ring trade again.
Travel and danger
Use the magic map from an island shore. It is not a universal teleport button from every indoor location. The sea invitation is a trap, so a map solution should not require entering the water.
Route scope
King’s Quest VI has optional puzzles and multiple routes. This page covers only the early map objective and does not promise a maximum-score playthrough or supply later spell ingredients. Save under different names as the island network opens up.
Common questions
What do I exchange for the magic map?
Alexander’s royal ring, after the ferryman has told you about the map.
Why will the map not work indoors?
Return to an island beach before selecting a destination.
