Escape from Monkey Island Walkthrough: Opening and Catapult
Free Guybrush in the opening, then stop the catapult aimed at the mansion. The key preparation is the popped inner tube from the harbor and pretzels obtained by distracting the drunk in the SCUMM Bar.

Walkthrough steps
- While tied up in the opening, use the brazier, take a hot coal and quickly kick it toward the loaded cannon.
- On Mêlée Island visit the harbor and collect the popped inner tube near the grog machine.
- Enter the SCUMM Bar and inspect the balloon near the sleeping pirate at the back.
- Speak to the dart players. Challenge their accuracy and get them to pop that balloon. Return to the back table and take the pretzels.
- At the mansion, attach the inner tube to the oddly shaped cactus. Do this before the distraction at the catapult.
- Offer the pretzels to the catapult operator. While he leaves his station, interfere with its controls and let the resulting scene play.
- Follow Elaine into the mansion once the threat is removed; make a new save before starting the island’s next objectives.
Version notes and help
Object selection on PC
The PC interface uses keyboard selection rather than the earlier games’ point-and-click verbs. Cycle nearby objects when the wrong hotspot is selected, then distinguish examine from use. A controller edition may show different button prompts for the same puzzle action.
Why the operator’s distraction is insufficient
The inner tube on the cactus is part of the setup. If the sequence is not resolving, check that preparation rather than assuming the pretzels themselves disable the weapon. Keep a save before the conversation so the short sequence can be retried cleanly.
What comes next
This guide ends when the mansion is safe. It does not supply the full Lucre Island investigation, Mystes O’ Tyme route or Monkey Kombat sequences. Those later puzzles have separate clues and inventory dependencies.
