Civilization V debug settings and FireTuner explained

Civilization V exposes debugging settings in its configuration files. These enable diagnostics and developer tools; they are not secret words typed during an ordinary turn. Back up the files and work with a local test save.

Use cheats only in a single-player game or an authorized private session. Keep an untouched save before changing a game state. This is an independent text guide. Civilization V is not available to play on Gamehub.

Setup and activation

  1. Close the game and back up its configuration files.
  2. Locate config.ini under the game’s My Games settings directory.
  3. Change only the diagnostic setting needed for your test.
  4. Restart the game, reproduce the issue and restore the backup when finished.

Version notes and help

What the configuration values do

EnableTuner=1 allows FireTuner connectivity, LoggingEnabled=1 writes diagnostic logs, and EnableLuaDebugLibrary=1 enables Lua debugging support. These settings are configuration assignments rather than commands to paste into the in-game chat box. Enabling logging does not grant resources or alter your treasury.

FireTuner versus a console cheat

FireTuner is a development tool with panels for inspecting game state. A developer testing a unit or technology uses it to examine what the game is doing. That is different from promising a stable player-facing money command across every expansion and patch.

A simpler route for ordinary play

If the goal is a more forgiving campaign, start a new local game at a lower difficulty and keep the normal progression rules. Debug configuration is most useful when diagnosing a mod or reproducing a problem. Retain a record of the value you changed so a later troubleshooting session starts from a known configuration.

Common questions

Do I need to download a trainer?

No. This page describes the game’s own facilities. It does not require an external executable, a paid cheat subscription or changes to an online account.

How should I test these changes?

Keep a separate unmodified save, make one change at a time and check the result before continuing. Reversing a toggle does not necessarily reverse everything that happened while it was active.
